Episodes 3 and 4 Recap: “To live is to die.”

After writing in a trance, Eul soon is moved by the spirits to the site where Phillip and Young man (An Doo Ho) are trapped under the landslide. She rescues them and fortunately, help is on the way. She gets home covered in mud and utterly tired. However, we see that she is now wearing the fate-swap necklace/bracelet Phillip had.

In a corridor, Phillip sees Kim Ra yun (Hwang Sun-hee) in front of him in white and as he calls out to her, she turns to him, but then half of her face looks burnt which then turns into Eul soon’s face. That wakes him up and he sees that he is in the hospital being treated along with  Young man who is lying on the couch.

Meanwhile, the man in a black hat realizes that Eul soon is the real writer of “A Ghost Love Story” as he thinks back to when Eul soon is hysterically calling out Eun young to come out of the apartment since she found out that Eun young stole her script. Apparently, the man followed the young lady, after stabbing Eul young/leaving Phillip for dead as he assumed. Now, we know that the young lady happened to be in Eun young’s apartment. So, who is she to Eun young?

Yoon ah is visiting Ra yun in a cremation room and a picture of five guys plus Ra yun provides the flash back of when all friend were in a band eight years. Yoon ah, whom I assume was a fan decides to take a group picture and she urged a shy Ra yun to be in the picture with the group since it will be a personal group picture.

Eul soon confirms that the she is the original owner of the bracelet/necklace she had when she was ten years old and she is overwhelmed with joy. Since, it is her birthday, her friend, Park Soo-min (Moo Soo-bin) prepares customary seaweed soup to celebrate her birthday. They are interrupted with the breaking news on Phillip’s accident and Soo min tries to convince her to let Phillip know that she has been the one saving him.

Sung joong tells Eul soon some good news; since Eun young is missing, the President of the station would like her to be the temporary writer until Eun young returns. This is a break for her as she is to meet with Phillip and the President to go over the script. At the meeting, Phillip is furious as to how Eul soon knew the exact details of the landslide as well as the name Ra Yun. Hilariously, Eul soon believes that RA YUN= RA MYEON because she couldn’t think of a character’s name and she was eating ramyeon at that moment. This irks Phillip more as he thinks that Eul soon knows more than she is leading on and she is deflecting by not taking the issue seriously. Anyways, he makes clear that he does not want to work with her.

Sung joong drives a saddened Eul soon home, who notices the apple tree in front of her home is blooming after years of being dead. On the other hand, at home, Phillip’s apple tree is completely dried out with rotten apples on the ground. He is hit with another surprise as famous American director, Steven Taylor has called to cancel his movie deal with him. To top it off, outside his gate, a mysterious woman decked in white, hat to shoe is staring at the house, a person/ghost, Sung joong notices as he drives by the house.

Phillip notices the second part of the script on the staircase and does not notice the mysterious woman drop it off. He assumes it is Young man who denies the accusation. Young man tries to convince Phillip to at least read the script as it is interesting, but Phillip is adamant.

At home, Eul soon is about to amend the script to suit Phillip when the room suddenly turns red and she hears musical cries of “Red.” In a trance, she begins to write as she changes the main male character from being killed in the landslide to the writer character’s room turning red = blood.

Curiosity does kills the cat as Phillip takes Young man’s advice to read the script. However, he magically gets stuck underneath a chair as he tries to reach over a page that fell off the script. At the same time, Eul soon is at the gate with the revised script to show him. She finds him in a compromising position and milks the situation as she presents him the revised script to look at while she gets her saw to get him unstuck.

The police respond to a call of an unidentified body found from the landslide. As the body gets ready to be transported, a female hand with a recognizable ring on her index finger suggests that the body could be Eun young’s.

Phillip wants to know how Eul soon is able to write a succinct script detailing moments similar, if not exact, to his life. Ignoring him, Eul soon does a good job spooking Phillip as she wonders how he got stuck under the chair and how the door slowly opened for her to enter like there is a ghost in the house.

As Sung joong is drawing the picture of Eul soon’s home, he thinks to when he dropped her off at home. He noticed a dark spirit hovering around the door in the next home. As he draws the spirit, he also believe that it is the same spirit that Phillip sensed at the airport.

Feeling haunted, in his tussle to want her to stay after doing a good job scaring him, Eul soon accidentally sits on the remote on the table which throws her off-balance and in his attempt to help her regain her balance, Phillip falls on top of her. While being in disorient, the news report that confirmed autopsy shows that the body found in the landslide is actually Ki Eun young’s.

Analysis

It is clear that Sung joong sees ghosts and the question is why and how. It is also clear now that Eul soon becomes possessed whenever she writes. Her possession comes in the form of a song which only she can hear and as soon as she stops trying to fight it, she enters a becomes.

It seems that whatever spirit is around her is trying to get her to use the script to tell us about something about Phillip’s life. The same light spirit is also “helping” her, or is it? One thing for sure is that spirit might be “good” as compared to the dark one surrounding Phillip. There is definitely something going on with Phillip which happened eight years ago and the spirit is trying to use the script to bring it to light.

It is like trying to solve a murder case only it involves the two people whose fate are conjoined and those that happen to know them are part of the conspiracy. Clever! But, why does their fate have to be ONE and what does it have to do with the bracelet? Now, that Eul soon has the bracelet, things will go downhill for Phillip. Also, why did man in a black hat want to kill the writer of the script and what is Yoon ah’s deal?
